Establishment:
YEAR 1992
There was chaos, gross violations of basic human rights, no peace, no law
and order.
Warlords were jockeying for power and the central government infrastructure
was disintegrated.
Kabul was under constant rocket attacks, more then 60,000 lives were lost,
and people took refuge elsewhere.
The overall health of the Afghans was further deteriorated.
This was the year! THE AMAA WAS BORN
Goals:
To help medical education by teaching Medicine and by providing books,
teaching material and equipment.
Humanitarian aid to Afghans, specifically to medical staff and students of
medical schools at the time of need.
To provide funds to help the hospitals if feasible.
Above help to be provided without consideration for the government in power
if possible.
Membership:
The membership has been growing
worldwide since 1992 including inside Afghanistan. The membership is extended to
all physicians, allied health professionals and all other individuals who are
interested in helping the goals of this association.
No aspect of the membership has been denied on the basis of sex, race, color,
age, creed, or national origin.
Activity:
Humanitarian aid: To refugees, Medical staff of KMI and Nangarhar medical
school, and students.
Hospitals: Funds and medicine to Children hospital in Jalalabad, Malalai
maternity hospital and Jumhuriat hospital in Kabul.
Medical Schools: Books and teaching aids to Kabul Medical Institute (KMI)
and Nangarhar medical school. Facilitation of agreement between KMI and Loma
Linda University (LLU), La Sierra university and Kabul University. Teaching
and survey of medical students in KMI.
The AMAA and LLU trips to Herat, Nangarhar and Kabul on several occasions.
Sponsor UCR student teachers to Kabul for computer education. Travel
expenses and lodging of delegates from Afghanistan to meet LLU and AMAA
leadership.
AMAA physicians travel to other US cities to meet with Afghan physicians.
AMAA Resolution:
The AMAA through repeated resolutions which were forwarded to the
authorities in Kabul, disagreed with the policies in regard to human rights
violations, religious etiquette, cultivation of poppies and terrorism.
The AMAA condemned in writing the destruction of the Afghan heritage and
forwarded it to the Taliban.
The AMAA through repeated resolutions has been asking for the elimination of
human rights abuses including but not limited to gender discrimination.
Future:
AMAA to continue and expand the current activities and continue cooperation
with LLU in regard to medical education in Afghanistan.
To facilitate and to coordinate a team of Afghan licensed physicians in the
US to promote their participation in teaching inside Afghanistan or through
distant teaching with the help of LLU.
Establishing a center for the AMAA at Kabul University.
To find a better way to cooperate with other Afghan physician groups
worldwide.
